Where it came from
The LEGO Trains 40th Anniversary Set, released as a limited promotional item in 2020, was designed to commemorate four decades of the iconic LEGO train system that began with the 1980 release of set 7740. The set pays direct homage to its predecessor, utilizing a smaller scale to capture the aesthetic of the classic 12V era while incorporating modern building techniques and elements that reflect the evolution of the brand over forty years.
The design intentionally evokes nostalgia by replicating the iconic engine and passenger carriage styling that defined early LEGO rail systems. Created as a gift-with-purchase, the set was received with enthusiasm by long-term adult fans of the hobby, who appreciated the meta-commentary of a set designed to celebrate the history of the product line itself. It serves as both a functional display piece and a symbolic acknowledgment of the enduring appeal of the LEGO locomotive theme.
