Where it came from
The LEGO City Level Crossing, set 7936, was released in 2010 as part of the broader City Trains sub-theme. Designed to integrate seamlessly with the flexible track systems introduced in previous years, it was created to provide a realistic infrastructure element for rail-based layouts. The set focused on expanding the functionality of a city display by simulating a functional road-rail intersection, mirroring real-world traffic management systems.
The design prioritizes playability and modularity, featuring two barrier arms, streetlights, and a short section of track. It was intended to complement larger train sets of the era, such as the Passenger Train or Cargo Train, by adding a tactile point of interaction. Upon release, it was well-received by the collector community for its utilitarian value and its ability to bridge the gap between road and rail environments within a city-themed build.
