Where it came from
The LEGO Speed Champions Lightning McQueen (set 77255) was released in 2017 as part of a collaborative effort between LEGO and Disney-Pixar. Designed to capture the distinct aerodynamic silhouette of the anthropomorphic race car from the Cars franchise, the set served to expand the Speed Champions line beyond real-world vehicle manufacturers into the realm of popular cinema. Its development focused on utilizing custom printed tiles to replicate the character's expressive eyes and signature '95' racing livery, which were crucial for maintaining brand consistency.
Upon its release, the model was received as a accessible entry point for younger builders and fans of the Cars films, distinct from the more complex technical builds typical of the Speed Champions series. It prioritized playability and character recognition, offering a compact representation that scaled well with other city-themed vehicles. The design remains a notable example of the line's occasional departure from strictly licensed automotive realism into stylized character-based tie-ins.
