Where it came from
The McLaren W1 LEGO Speed Champions set, released in 2025, serves as a brick-built tribute to the real-world McLaren W1 hypercar, the successor to the legendary F1 and P1 models. Developed in close collaboration with McLaren Automotive, the set was designed to capture the complex aerodynamics and aggressive stance of the vehicle, which was engineered to push the boundaries of track-focused road performance. The LEGO design team focused on replicating the distinct gull-wing doors and intricate rear spoiler design that characterize the actual W1, ensuring the model remains true to the brand's identity within the 8-stud-wide Speed Champions format.
Part of the popular Speed Champions theme, this set follows a long lineage of collectible vehicle replicas that prioritize accessible engineering for fans of automotive history. By distilling the W1’s advanced hybrid powertrain and performance-oriented aesthetics into a miniature form, the design aims to offer a satisfying build experience for enthusiasts of modern engineering. Upon its announcement, the set received attention from both the automotive and AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) communities for its clever use of specialized elements to mimic the aerodynamic sculpting of the full-sized car.
