Where it came from
Released in 1980 as part of the Lego Duplo line, set 2622-1, commonly referred to as the Little Plane, was designed to introduce toddlers to basic construction and roleplay. During this era, the Duplo system was expanding significantly beyond basic bricks to include larger, simplified vehicle components that allowed young children to build their first functional models without the complex clutch power required by standard Lego bricks.
The design of the plane features a robust, chunky aesthetic characteristic of early 1980s Duplo, emphasizing safety and durability for smaller hands. It arrived during a period when the Lego Group was actively diversifying the Duplo theme to include recognizable vehicles and figures, aiming to bridge the gap between simple building blocks and imaginative play. Its reception remains rooted in nostalgia, as it is frequently cited by collectors as a quintessential piece from the foundational years of the theme.
