Where it came from
Released in 2019 as part of the Lego City Space subtheme, the Lunar Space Station 60227 was designed to coincide with a broader push by the company to modernize its space exploration sets. Inspired by contemporary aerospace engineering and NASA's long-term lunar ambitions, the set was conceived as a modular habitat that could interface with other space-themed releases from that year, encouraging a modular play experience for builders interested in realistic base-building.
The design team focused on creating a functional, multi-compartment research station, incorporating features like a detachable shuttle, airlock systems, and specialized equipment like a drone and robot. It was generally well-received by the collector community for its playability and technical aesthetic, standing out as a centerpiece for the City Space wave due to its distinctive cross-shaped modular architecture and inclusion of a diverse team of astronaut minifigures.
