Where it came from
The LEGO City Mars Research Shuttle, set 60226-1, was released in 2019 as part of the broader 'Space' subtheme within the City line. This set was designed to coincide with a wave of space-exploration kits that leaned into contemporary interests in Mars missions and modern aerospace aesthetics. The design team focused on creating an interactive, modular play experience, featuring a shuttle with an opening cockpit and a rover with an articulated robotic arm, reflecting the functionality of real-world planetary exploration vehicles.
The set was conceived to provide an accessible introduction to space-themed construction, emphasizing playability through its inclusion of a space station module and two astronaut minifigures. Upon its release, it was well-received by the building community for its inclusion of the then-new 'geode' elements and its ability to connect with other kits in the series, such as the Deep Space Rocket and Launch Control, allowing for a cohesive base-building experience inspired by NASA-style mission planning.
