Where it came from
The Monster Book of Monsters (LEGO set 30628-1) was released in 2020 as a promotional item associated with the LEGO Harry Potter theme. It was designed to replicate the sentient, temperamental textbook required for Care of Magical Creatures classes at Hogwarts, as seen in the third film of the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. The set incorporates a clever mechanical feature that causes the book's jaws to snap shut when it is rolled along a flat surface, mirroring the behavior of the magical creature described by J.K. Rowling.
The design successfully captures the chaotic aesthetic of the source material by utilizing textured elements to simulate fur and ornate, tooth-like pieces to mimic the book's bindings. It was primarily distributed through LEGO brand stores and online shops as a gift-with-purchase incentive to celebrate the ongoing expansion of the Wizarding World product line. The set was generally well-received by fans and collectors for its interactive functions and its faithful representation of a memorable, albeit aggressive, prop from the film franchise.
