Where it came from
Released in the early 1960s, the LEGO 113-2 Motorized Train Set arrived during a pivotal era for the company as they transitioned toward the modern brick system. This set was designed to bring motion to the burgeoning LEGO town layouts, utilizing a 4.5-volt battery motor that was considered highly innovative for residential play at the time. Its development focused on modularity, allowing children to construct a functional engine that could navigate the newly introduced blue rails, marking a significant evolution from static display models to active, mechanized play.
The aesthetic of the 113-2 reflects the clean, minimalist design language characteristic of LEGO sets from the mid-century period. While the identity of individual lead designers for early sets is rarely cataloged in public archives, the set is widely regarded by historians as a quintessential example of the 'System of Play' philosophy, which emphasized imagination over rigid instruction. Upon its release, it was well-received by the hobbyist community, establishing the structural foundation for the complex train systems that remain a staple of the brand today.
