Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the Lego Town theme, the Mountain Rescue set 6487-1 was designed to capture the essence of high-altitude emergency services. It features a helicopter and a small rescue vehicle, reflecting the era's focus on practical, play-oriented sets that expanded the modular possibilities of the Lego town layout. This set followed the established design language of late 90s Lego, utilizing a vibrant color palette and functional elements to appeal to younger builders interested in rescue-themed scenarios.
The set was conceptualized by the internal design team at the Lego Group during a period of transition in their set philosophy, moving toward more specialized vehicle designs. By focusing on the interplay between air and land support, the set provided a complete narrative in a single box, a hallmark of the Town series. Upon release, it was well-received by fans as a reliable addition to the rescue sub-theme, remaining a recognizable example of late twentieth-century system-based play.
