Where it came from
The Ninjago Skybound Shield, released in 2016 under set number 853530-1, was produced as a roleplay accessory to coincide with the sixth season of the Ninjago television series, titled Skybound. This season focused on the ninja's battle against the djinn Nadakhan and his crew of sky pirates, a theme that influenced the aesthetic of the gear released during this wave. The shield was designed to allow younger fans to physically engage with the play patterns established in the show, serving as an immersive extension of the building sets.
The design of the shield reflects the distinctive aesthetic of the Skybound subtheme, incorporating a color palette of metallic blues, golds, and deep teals to evoke the high-seas, swashbuckling nature of the aerial pirate ships. Like other accessory packs and gear from this era, it was constructed from molded plastic intended for durability during imaginative play. While these roleplay items were generally well-received by the target demographic as accessible entry points into the Ninjago lore, they are now primarily sought by adult collectors looking to complete the wider catalog of Ninjago-themed releases.
