Where it came from
The Vermillion Sword, released as set 853689-1 in 2017, was designed as a roleplay accessory tied to the 'Hands of Time' season of the LEGO Ninjago animated series. In the show, the Vermillion Warriors—an army created by the serpentine twin villains Acronix and Krux—wield these distinctive, organic-looking blades as their primary weaponry. The accessory was produced to allow fans to physically enact the conflict between the Ninja and this new, serpent-inspired threat.
The design of the sword reflects the aesthetic of the Vermillion faction, incorporating intricate, faux-worn textures and a color palette of deep red and metallic hues intended to mimic the appearance of rusted metal and organic slime. As a plastic foam-based roleplay item, it sought to balance safety with the detailed, aggressive visual style prevalent in the Ninjago series during that era. It was marketed primarily as a costume enhancement, appealing to younger fans engaged in imaginative play.
