Where it came from
Onepu, released in 2001 as part of the initial Bionicle wave, represents the leader of the Onu-Matoran village of Onu-Koro. These small, posable figures were designed to introduce the inhabitants of the Mata Nui island setting, serving as civilian counterparts to the larger Toa heroes. The design utilized a specialized Technic-based building system that prioritized ease of assembly and high playability, reflecting a strategic shift by the manufacturer toward narrative-driven themes.
The figure was illustrated and conceptualized by the internal creative team at Lego in collaboration with external narrative architects to establish the foundation of the Bionicle universe. Onepu is distinguished by his lime green mask and distinctive mining tools, reflecting his role as an underground excavation worker. Upon release, the set was well-received by fans for its compact form factor and its integration into the broader interactive multimedia story that defined the early 2000s.
