Onewa

Released in 2001 as part of the inaugural Bionicle product line, Onewa represents the Po-Matoran character from the village of Po-Koro. This figure was designed as a small-scale canister set, featuring a modular construction that allowed for articulation and interaction with the larger Technic ecosystem. It emerged during a critical period for the LEGO Group, serving as the foundational building block for a narrative-heavy franchise that would eventually save the company from significant financial instability.

The character design reflects the elemental aesthetic of stone, utilizing a distinct color palette of tan and brown consistent with the Po-Matoran archetypes. Conceptualized by the internal creative team alongside the broader Bionicle mythos, Onewa was crafted to be accessible to younger builders while maintaining the intricate aesthetic of the late-era Technic line. The set was well-received by consumers, credited with helping establish the immersive lore and character-driven world-building that became the hallmark of the Bionicle brand.
