Where it came from
The LEGO Optimus Prime set, released in 2022, serves as a celebration of the original 1984 G1 Transformers toy line. It was designed by Joseph Kyde, a former Hasbro designer turned LEGO lead, who focused on engineering the model to achieve a seamless transformation between the iconic truck mode and the robot form without the need for disassembly. This approach was a technical milestone for the company, as it marked the first time a LEGO set could shift between modes while maintaining the structural integrity of a display-focused Icons release.
Upon its debut, the set received widespread praise for its fidelity to the character's vintage aesthetics and its complex internal mechanisms. Critics and fans noted that it successfully bridged the gap between the building block medium and the mechanical playability associated with the original Takara and Hasbro toy concepts. The design intentionally evokes the nostalgia of the 1980s animated series, incorporating subtle details like the Matrix of Leadership and a removable Energon cube to ground the figure in its classic source material.
