Where it came from
The Lion Knights' Castle, released in 2022, was designed as an expansive tribute to the 90th anniversary of the LEGO Group. It draws significant inspiration from the classic 1984 King’s Castle, aiming to capture the nostalgia of the original Castle theme while incorporating modern building techniques, complex interior layouts, and a significantly higher piece count. The design team focused on creating a multifaceted, modular structure that could open into a large fortification or close into a compact castle footprint.
Upon its release, the set was widely received as a definitive collector's piece for adult fans of the hobby, praised for its dense storytelling elements and thematic commitment. It features an array of minifigures that pay homage to historical factions, effectively blending the aesthetic sensibilities of the late 20th-century sets with the structural sophistication expected of the modern Icons line.
