Where it came from
The Pen Tahnok, set number 1720-2, was released as a promotional item during the early 2000s, reflecting a period where Lego expanded into functional stationery and office products. It was designed to resemble the Bionicle character Tahnok, one of the Bohrok drones, incorporating the distinctive rounded faceplate and color scheme associated with the fire-themed creatures. This period of Bionicle history focused on expanding the brand beyond traditional building sets into lifestyle and household merchandise.
The design intent behind these promotional pens was to bring the aesthetic of the Bionicle universe into the school and office supply markets. By miniaturizing the iconic mechanical features of the Bohrok, the designers aimed to capture the appeal of the high-action series in a daily-use item. While these pens were not as widely distributed as the core action figure sets, they remain recognized by collectors for their commitment to the specific mechanical design language of the 2002 Bionicle wave.
