Where it came from
Released in 2012 as part of the LEGO Friends line, the Penguin's Ice Slide set was designed to introduce smaller, affordable entry points into the burgeoning Heartlake City universe. The set was created to complement the series' focus on nurturing play, featuring a simplified build centered around a small arctic habitat for a stylized animal figure, moving away from the more complex structural builds of the main line.
The design aesthetic for the LEGO Friends sub-theme was spearheaded by the company's team to offer a distinct departure from the primary LEGO aesthetic, utilizing a specific color palette of pastels and purples. While initially met with mixed reactions from traditional hobbyists due to the introduction of the mini-doll figure, the set was well-received by its target demographic for its playability and accessibility, becoming a hallmark of the early expansion of the Friends theme.
