Where it came from
The LEGO City Police Boat, released as set 30017-1, debuted in 2011 as part of the polybag promotional line. These small-scale sets were primarily distributed as marketing tie-ins, often found in retail checkout aisles or as gifts-with-purchase, designed to offer an accessible, bite-sized entry point into the broader LEGO City theme which has long been a staple of the brand's catalog.
The design prioritizes playability within a limited piece count, focusing on the essential silhouette of a maritime patrol vessel. While the designer remains uncredited—as is standard for promotional polybags developed internally at LEGO—the aesthetic aligns with the blue and white color scheme consistent with the City sub-theme of the era. It was received as a functional, utilitarian addition for collectors who focus on completing the extensive range of City vehicles.
