Where it came from
The Police Building Set (4636-1) was released by LEGO in 2004 as part of the short-lived Explore line, which was specifically designed for younger children. This set represents a transitional era in the company's approach to the toddler and preschool market, moving away from the large-scale Duplo bricks toward a more integrated experience that bridged the gap between basic construction and traditional system-scale play.
The design of the set reflects the aesthetic of the early 2000s, utilizing a modular, simplified approach intended to foster fine motor skills and imaginative roleplay. By focusing on a classic community-service theme, the designers aimed to provide a recognizable and safe entry point for children new to building. It was received as a functional, entry-level educational tool, though it remains a niche item that has since been largely overshadowed by the evolution of the dedicated LEGO City and Duplo police sub-themes.
