Where it came from
The LEGO Police Headquarters, set 370-1, was released in 1978 as part of the broader Legoland Town theme. This period marked a significant evolution for the company, as it introduced the modern minifigure with movable arms and legs, fundamentally changing how children interacted with their builds. The set was designed to be a cornerstone of a growing modular city system, providing a central hub for the new law enforcement characters that populated the evolving LEGO world.
The design reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of late 1970s LEGO, characterized by a primary color palette and simple, functional brick construction. Its architecture—an open-backed building with a garage bay and a small jail cell—was intended to prioritize playability and access to the interior. At the time of its release, the set was received as a versatile addition to the Town line, helping to establish the enduring trope of the police station as a focal point for child-led narratives of civic order and imagination.
