Where it came from
Released in 1978, the Police Units set 540-2 emerged during the foundational era of the LEGO Legoland theme. As one of the early offerings in the small-box series, it was designed to help children populate their nascent city layouts with functional, narrative-driven vehicles. The set represents a period when LEGO design focused on simple, universal aesthetics using limited color palettes and standard brick geometries.
The design is attributed to the internal LEGO design team of the late seventies, who sought to maximize playability through basic structural components. The set features a compact police car and a motorcycle, reflecting the minimalist aesthetic of the time. While not as complex as modern sets, it was well-regarded for its accessibility and became a staple for early collectors looking to build out civil service displays.
