Where it came from
The Porg was developed as a creature for the 2017 film Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Designed by the Lucasfilm creature shop, the species was conceived by director Rian Johnson to address the practical challenge of filming on Skellig Michael, an island sanctuary for puffins. Rather than digitally removing the protected birds, the production team opted to create an indigenous alien species that could be puppeteered or integrated via computer-generated imagery to match the environment.
Jake Lunt Davies served as the primary character designer for the Porg, drawing aesthetic inspiration from a mix of puffins, owls, and pugs. The design team sought to capture a look that was both endearing and consistent with the rugged, isolated atmosphere of Luke Skywalker's exile planet, Ahch-To. Upon the film's release, the Porg became an immediate cultural phenomenon, widely recognized for its expressive eyes and status as a mascot for the sequel trilogy.
