Where it came from
The Rabbit and Bear Friend set, cataloged as 1594-1, was released in 1999 as part of the Lego Duplo collection. This set was designed specifically for toddlers, emphasizing simple, chunky components that facilitate early motor skill development through intuitive stacking and connection. During this era, the Duplo line focused on introducing friendly, approachable animal figures to young children, utilizing high-contrast colors and rounded edges to ensure both safety and visual engagement during play.
The design of these figures follows the established Duplo aesthetic of the late nineties, which prioritized distinct, simplified forms over complex articulation. By focusing on a rabbit and a bear, the designers sought to tap into familiar motifs from early childhood storytelling. The set was well-received as a foundational building block for young builders, providing a straightforward entry point into the broader Duplo system before moving on to more complex sets.
