Where it came from
The 1190 Retro Buggy was released in 1989 as part of the LEGO Model Team sub-theme. During this era, LEGO sought to introduce a more realistic, detailed aesthetic that moved away from the simple, blocky designs of the standard town sets, aiming instead to capture the sophisticated look of hobbyist-grade remote-controlled vehicles.
The set was designed to emphasize mechanical play features, including independent suspension and a hinged cockpit, which were innovative for the time. By focusing on technical accuracy and a sleek, sporty silhouette, the designers successfully created an iconic model that helped define the early identity of the Model Team series as a sophisticated step up from smaller, traditional LEGO builds.
