Where it came from
The Sanctum Sanctorum Showdown, set 76108-1, was released in 2018 as part of the LEGO Marvel Super Heroes theme, specifically tied to the promotional cycle for the film Avengers: Infinity War. The set was designed to capture the iconic New York City residence of Doctor Strange, providing a modular structure that could be opened for play or closed to serve as a cityscape backdrop. It featured a focus on complex exterior detailing and functional play features, such as the exploding wall and the hidden Infinity Stone.
The design team emphasized architectural accuracy within the constraints of the LEGO system, incorporating the distinctive round window of the Sanctum and multiple levels of interior detail to represent the characters' living and workspace. Upon its release, the set was well-received by fans and critics alike for its unique 'folding' building technique and the inclusion of high-demand minifigures, including Iron Man, Doctor Strange, and Ebony Maw, which made it a centerpiece for Marvel collectors at the time.
