Where it came from
The Skull Sorcerer's Dragon (set 71721) was released in 2020 as part of the LEGO Ninjago 'Master of the Mountain' wave. This collection arc marked a shift in the long-running series toward a dungeon-crawler aesthetic, incorporating board game mechanics directly into the building sets. The dragon is designed as the primary antagonist's mount, intended to represent the dark magic found within the Shintaro mountains, featuring a distinct skeletal aesthetic that departs from the organic, elemental dragons typical of the theme.
The model was designed to integrate with the sub-theme's modular board game system, allowing the dragon to interact with the included minifigures through a printed game board base. Its construction emphasizes a ghoulish color palette of black, dark grey, and trans-purple to reflect the character of the Skull Sorcerer. The set was generally well-received by fans of the franchise for its complex wing-span and the inclusion of unique armored minifigures that anchored the season's tabletop gaming narrative.
