Where it came from
The 5198-1 Small Plates, Disks and Cones set was manufactured by Lego as a specialized educational resource. Released during the late 1980s, the set was designed primarily for institutional use within schools and early childhood development centers, intended to help students explore fundamental geometry, spatial reasoning, and mechanical balance through tactile play.
The design of these elements reflects the functional, minimalist approach characteristic of Lego's Dacta educational line. By stripping away the iconic stud-and-tube coupling system found in standard bricks, the set focused on smooth shapes that allow for stacking, rolling, and comparative analysis of physical properties. These pieces were well-regarded in pedagogical circles for their durability and the simplicity with which they introduced complex structural concepts to young learners.
