Where it came from
Released in 1983 as part of the LEGO Fabuland series, the Soft Ladybird and Bee set number 3235-1 represents a distinct departure from the brand's standard interlocking plastic brick system. Produced during a period when the company was experimenting with softer materials and tactile experiences for younger demographics, these figures were crafted from a pliable, foam-like substance intended to be safer and more comfortable for toddlers to handle during play.
The design of these characters reflects the whimsical, storybook aesthetic championed by the Fabuland line, which featured anthropomorphic animal figures and rounded, friendly shapes. While the initiative was a unique attempt to bridge the gap between traditional construction toys and plush playthings, the soft material was prone to degradation over time. Consequently, surviving examples are highly sought after by collectors interested in the experimental era of late twentieth-century toy design.
