Where it came from
The Source Dragon of Motion, released in 2024 as part of the LEGO Ninjago Dragons Rising theme, represents the culmination of a design evolution focused on articulating massive, mythical creatures. It was created to serve as a centerpiece of the second season of the Ninjago reboot, reflecting a narrative shift toward elemental sources of power and the expansion of the franchise's lore. The set was designed to be the largest dragon model ever produced for the theme, emphasizing dynamic movement and scale.
Designers focused on achieving a high degree of poseability, utilizing ball-jointed limbs and complex wing mechanisms to convey the sense of swift, fluid motion suggested by the dragon's name. The aesthetic draws upon traditional East Asian dragon iconography while integrating the signature futuristic, high-tech flair characteristic of Ninjago. Upon its release, it was received as a significant technical achievement within the LEGO portfolio, noted for its intricate build techniques and the inclusion of numerous unique minifigures that ground the set in the current series' ongoing storyline.
