Where it came from
Released in 1997 as part of the short-lived Fright Knights subtheme within the broader LEGO Castle line, Spider's Secret was designed to introduce a darker, more macabre aesthetic to the traditional medieval fantasy sets. The collection signaled a departure from the classic knightly factions of the late 1980s and early 1990s, pivoting toward a gothic style that featured distinctive translucent elements and new character designs, such as the glowing green dragon and the wizard Willa the Witch.
The set was conceived during a period of experimentation for the company as they sought to revitalize the Castle theme with more whimsical and atmospheric motifs. While it was well-received by children for its unique color palette and inclusion of a rare minifigure, adult enthusiasts of the time were occasionally critical of the departure from the established historical realism of earlier Castle sets. Over time, it has become a nostalgic touchstone for collectors of 1990s-era play themes.
