Where it came from
Released in 2011 as part of the inaugural wave of the LEGO Ninjago theme, the Spitta minifigure represents the Fangpyre tribe, one of the four original Serpentine armies. The character was designed to embody the serpentine aesthetic of the conflict, featuring a unique molded headpiece and a distinct red and cream color palette that distinguished the tribe from their reptilian counterparts. The figure was included in the set 'Fangpyre Truck Ambush,' which highlighted the theme's focus on vehicle-based combat and faction-specific weaponry.
The design of the Serpentine figures was a pivotal shift for the Ninjago line, introducing specialized non-human head molds that allowed for greater narrative complexity within the Ninjago universe. These figures were well-received by fans for their intricate printing and the integration of 'spinner' combat play. By incorporating elements of classic fantasy and modern engineering, the Spitta character contributed to the early establishment of Ninjago as a cornerstone of the LEGO portfolio.
