Where it came from
The Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back theatrical poster remains one of the most iconic pieces of film promotional art in history. Released in 1980, the design was spearheaded by illustrator Roger Kastel, who took inspiration from the classic compositional style of Gone with the Wind to frame the epic scale of the sequel. His work captures the dramatic tension between Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia while prominently featuring Darth Vader’s looming silhouette, reflecting the darker tone George Lucas intended for the middle chapter of the original trilogy.
Upon its debut, the poster was widely praised for its painterly aesthetic and ability to distill the film's complex emotional stakes into a single image. It departed from the more collage-oriented style of the original 1977 Star Wars poster, favoring a cohesive narrative focus. Over the decades, this artwork has been repurposed for various promotional materials, including sets and commemorative editions, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of 20th-century pop culture design.
