Where it came from
The Lego Ideas Steamboat Willie set, released in 2019, was created to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Mickey Mouse’s debut in the 1928 animated short film of the same name. Submitted to the Lego Ideas platform by fan designer Máté Szabó, the set was selected for production after garnering the necessary community support. Its development serves as a tribute to the historical significance of the black-and-white animation era, marking the first time the character appeared in an official Lego set.
The design of the set intentionally replicates the vintage aesthetic of the original animation, utilizing a monochromatic color palette of black, white, and grey to mirror the film's look. It includes articulated elements such as rotating paddle wheels and chimneys that rise and fall as the boat moves, capturing the rhythmic animation style of the original short. Upon its release, the set was well received by animation historians and collectors for its commitment to the source material's artistic roots.
