Where it came from
The LEGO Ideas Voltron set, released in 2018, was born from a successful submission to the LEGO Ideas platform by fan designer Leandro Tayag. The concept captured the imagination of the community by proposing a functional, transformable version of the iconic 1980s animated robot, which consisted of five distinct mechanical lions that could be detached or combined into a single, substantial figure.
The official design team refined Tayag's original concept to ensure structural integrity and articulation, resulting in a display piece that honored the source material's aesthetic while adhering to the standard of modern LEGO engineering. Upon its release, the set was praised for its clever use of color and the complexity required to maintain the robot's iconic silhouette in both its individual and combined states, eventually becoming a notable milestone for the LEGO Ideas line.
