Where it came from
The Sting Ray Stormer, set number 6198-1, was released in 1997 as part of the short-lived LEGO UFO theme. This series explored a space-faring narrative characterized by vibrant color schemes, specifically incorporating bright neon green cockpits and trans-neon orange elements, which contrasted sharply with the traditional grey and blue palettes of previous space lines like Blacktron or M-Tron.
The design of the Sting Ray Stormer centers on a small, agile interceptor craft intended to represent the nimble scout ships of the alien factions. It features a distinct articulated cockpit canopy and forward-sweeping wings, reflecting a shift toward more specialized, character-driven vehicle designs in the late 1990s. While the UFO theme was brief, it is remembered by enthusiasts for its experimental aesthetic and departure from grounded science fiction tropes.
