Where it came from
The Surfer Dragon (set 40281) was released in 2018 as part of a series of promotional builds offered by The LEGO Group to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the classic LEGO brick. It was designed as a polybag set, intended to showcase the versatility of basic building elements by reimagining iconic models from the company's past decades in a miniature format.
The model reflects a playful, whimsical design aesthetic common to LEGO's celebratory anniversary promotions. It drew inspiration from the larger, more complex fantasy creatures found in earlier catalogs, distilling those concepts into a compact footprint that favored imaginative, accessible play. Upon its release, it was well-received by the collector community as a charming nod to the brand's creative history.
