Where it came from
The Insect Collection was released in 2023 as part of the LEGO Ideas theme, a program that invites fans to submit their own designs for potential commercial production. This set originated from a design submission by José María Pérez Suero, a fan designer who sought to translate the intricate beauty of the natural world into brick form. The set was created to celebrate entomology through a stylized, display-oriented aesthetic, emphasizing the unique shapes and vibrant colors of its three featured subjects: the blue morpho butterfly, the Hercules beetle, and the Chinese mantis.
The design process focused on balancing scientific accuracy with the limitations and opportunities of the plastic medium. By utilizing specialized elements to replicate the delicate curves of insect wings and the segmented nature of exoskeletons, the designers aimed to move beyond traditional building techniques. Upon its release, the collection was well received by the adult collector community, praised for its sophisticated display stands and the inclusion of educational vignettes depicting the insects within their native habitats.
