Where it came from
Published in 2010 by No Starch Press, this guide was developed to accompany the LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT 2.0 robotics kit, which had been released by the LEGO Group three years prior. It was written by Laurens Valk, a member of the LEGO MINDSTORMS Community Partners program, to provide a structured educational resource for users who wanted to progress beyond the basic building instructions included in the original retail box. The book was conceived during a period when the DIY robotics movement was gaining significant traction in both home and academic settings, aiming to bridge the gap between simple construction and complex programming logic.
The design of the book emphasizes a project-based learning approach, featuring detailed, step-by-step instructions for building and coding various functional robots. Valk focused on clear, visual diagrams that mirror the classic LEGO instruction style while incorporating pedagogical explanations of sensors and control algorithms. The book was well-received by the STEM education community for its accessibility and ability to simplify technical concepts for hobbyists, effectively becoming a staple resource for the MINDSTORMS user base throughout the lifecycle of the NXT platform.
