Where it came from
The LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 Discovery Book, authored by Laurens Valk and published by No Starch Press, was released following the 2013 launch of the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 platform. Created to bridge the gap between the kit's basic instructional materials and the complex capabilities of the hardware, the book provides a structured curriculum for learning robotics. It was designed to guide users through building and programming increasingly sophisticated robots, effectively serving as an unofficial manual that empowers hobbyists and students to move beyond the limitations of introductory projects.
Laurens Valk, a member of the LEGO MINDSTORMS Community Partners program, focused the design of the book on a project-based learning approach that highlights the nuances of the EV3 programming language. The text emphasizes practical application, featuring step-by-step instructions for diverse builds, ranging from simple rovers to complex creatures. Upon its release, it was widely praised by the educational robotics community for its clarity and depth, becoming a standard resource for educators and enthusiasts who seek to understand the technical potential of the EV3 system.
