Where it came from
The Terror Below poster was produced as promotional material for the board game of the same name, released in 2019 by Renegade Game Studios. The game, designed by Peter C. Hayward, tasks players with exploring a subterranean world while avoiding gargantuan creatures. The poster was created to capture the game's Lovecraftian-inspired atmosphere, emphasizing the tension of unseen threats lurking beneath the soil.
The illustrative style draws heavily from early 20th-century pulp fiction covers, utilizing high-contrast lighting and a muted color palette to evoke a sense of vintage dread. It was designed to highlight the game's unique 'tunneling' mechanic, and upon its release, the artwork was well-received by fans of the tabletop horror genre for successfully translating the game's claustrophobic theme into a striking visual format.
