Where it came from
Released in 2006 as part of the LEGO Racers theme, the Tokyo International Circuit (set 8679) was designed to capture the high-energy aesthetic of professional street racing. The set was created during a period when the LEGO Group was heavily investing in licensed and thematic vehicle lines, aiming to provide builders with a complex, modular track system that mimicked the layout of urban motor racing circuits.
The design focused on dynamic play features, incorporating a multi-car starting grid, pit stop areas, and grandstand elements to simulate a race day atmosphere. While the set was intended for younger builders, its scale and the inclusion of multiple race cars made it a notable entry in the Racers line, receiving recognition for its ability to offer a complete, contained racing environment in a single box.
