Where it came from
The Tokyo Key Chain (set 850801-1) was released by the LEGO Group in the mid-1980s as part of a line of branded promotional accessories. These key chains were designed to serve as functional, portable mementos, capitalizing on the rising popularity of the company's international branding and the expansion of their global retail presence during that decade.
The design is characterized by a simple, utilitarian aesthetic typical of 1980s LEGO promotional items, featuring a printed tile or molded element reflecting its specific location. While the company's design team produced a variety of regional key chains during this era, these items were generally intended for casual souvenir use rather than as core construction sets, leading them to be treated as minor collectibles within the broader history of the brand.
