Where it came from
The Tow Truck and Car, set 651-1, was released in 1977 as part of the early Town sub-theme, representing a formative era for LEGO systems when the company was expanding its modular city-building concepts. This set was designed during a period when the company transitioned from simple brick-based vehicles to more sophisticated designs using dedicated chassis plates and specialized steering wheels, reflecting a push toward higher playability and functional realism in their small-scale sets.
The design focused on a minimalist aesthetic, utilizing a classic color palette of red and yellow that defined many of the sets from the late 1970s. As a foundational piece of the classic Town line, it was received as a versatile addition to budding city layouts of the era, appreciated for its simplicity and the inclusion of the functional towing hook, which allowed it to interact with other contemporary vehicle sets.
