Where it came from
The 642-1 Tow Truck and Car set was released in 1971 as part of the Legoland series, a cornerstone of the company’s evolution into modular, city-focused building toys. At this time, the brand was transitioning toward the iconic minifigure-scale designs that would define the next several decades of play, focusing on vehicles that allowed children to role-play emergency services and road maintenance scenarios.
The design follows the aesthetic of early 1970s construction, characterized by its reliance on basic brick geometry and a distinct, limited color palette common to the era. Created during a period of experimentation with vehicle utility, the set provided a simple, functional hook mechanism for the truck to tow the accompanying vehicle. While later iterations would grow more complex, this model is frequently cited by collectors for its role in establishing the visual language of the classic Town sub-theme.
