Where it came from
The 872-1 Two Gear Blocks set was released in 1977 as part of the initial launch of the Lego Expert Builder series, which would later be rebranded as Lego Technic. Created during a period of transition for the company, this set served as a foundational component meant to introduce builders to the mechanics of motion, torque, and gear ratios, moving beyond the static structures of standard system bricks.
The design of these gear blocks emphasizes functional utility over decorative detail, featuring basic interlocking components that allowed for the creation of simple transmissions and mechanisms. By focusing on the structural essence of mechanical engineering, the set helped establish the modular design language that defines the Technic theme today, finding favor among hobbyists interested in early educational construction sets.
