Where it came from
The LEGO Tyrannosaurus Rex, released in 2001 under the set number 6720-1, belongs to a brief but distinct era of LEGO design where the company experimented with larger, non-system scale animal figures. Produced during a period of significant transition for the LEGO Group, this set was aimed at providing builders with a standalone, articulated prehistoric creature that could be posed and displayed, departing from the typical brick-built modular structures that defined the brand at the time.
The design of this T-Rex focuses on a streamlined aesthetic, utilizing a specialized molded body component rather than a classic construction-brick approach. This choice reflected a design philosophy intended to create more realistic and recognizable fauna for play, although it sparked debate among long-time fans who valued the traditional 'system' building experience. While it remains a niche piece for collectors of the 2001 period, it serves as a snapshot of LEGO's interest in integrating pre-formed figures into their broader product catalog.
