Where it came from
Released in 2022 as part of the LEGO Creator theme, the 40517 Vespa serves as a smaller, more accessible tribute to the iconic Italian scooter than its larger Creator Expert counterpart. Designed to capture the quintessential silhouette of the mid-century motor scooter, the set utilizes a modest piece count to recreate the Vespa's distinctive curves, handlebars, and storage box. It was developed to offer fans a quick build that functions well as a display piece for those with limited space, distilling the essence of the classic vehicle into a compact form factor.
The design of this model reflects LEGO's broader initiative to honor automotive history through accessible scale. By focusing on the signature aesthetic of the Vespa, the design team prioritized the recognizable front fairing and classic color scheme. Upon its release, the set was received warmly by adult collectors and enthusiasts of the Creator line, who appreciated the clever use of simple elements to convey complex, organic shapes associated with real-world industrial design.
