Where it came from
The LEGO Ideas Vintage Car, set number 40448-1, was released in early 2021 as a promotional gift-with-purchase. The design originated from a fan-submitted entry by LEGO Ideas user Versteinert, who participated in a 2019 contest seeking a new vehicle for the theme. The model was chosen by the community and the LEGO design team to be adapted into an official set, capturing the aesthetic of a classic 1950s-style cruiser with its elegant curves, white-wall tires, and surf-inspired accessories.
The design successfully balances compact dimensions with character, incorporating a vibrant color palette and unique parts usage to replicate the chrome-heavy look of mid-century automotive styling. Upon its release, it was well-received by the adult collector community for its charm and the nostalgic appeal of the era it represents. It stands as a notable example of the collaborative nature of the LEGO Ideas platform, where fan creativity is transitioned into production-ready building experiences.
