Water Police Detective Missions

The LEGO City Water Police Detective Missions set, released in 2022, represents a significant shift in the LEGO design philosophy by integrating physical building with an interactive, app-based storytelling experience. Departing from traditional instruction-led construction, this set encourages builders to engage with digital missions through a tablet or smartphone, where the build process is guided by a narrative flow rather than a static booklet. This approach was crafted to emphasize creative problem-solving and open-ended play within the established City theme, allowing users to influence the outcome of the police investigation as they assemble the included craft and characters.

The design of the set focuses on the 'Water Police' aesthetic, featuring a customizable speedboat that serves as the central vehicle for the missions. Designers aimed to balance the durability required for active play with modular elements that allow for specific mission-based adaptations. By utilizing a companion app to present challenges, the developers sought to bridge the gap between traditional tactile play and contemporary digital engagement, targeting a younger demographic that values both construction and cinematic interaction. Upon release, the set was noted for its departure from standard instruction manuals, reflecting a broader trend in the LEGO Group's efforts to diversify the play patterns associated with their core city-themed offerings.
